Car Radios
Car radios are perhaps what most people think of when someone say ‘radio.’ There are two basic types of radio for the car: music radio and communication radios. Most people are familiar with the former rather than the latter, which is mainly been limited to commercial or government use. Nonetheless, there are now many different types of radios that can be used in cars to help hear what’s happening and to communicate while driving. These products are especially important for commercial applications on the open road, something that truck drivers know very well. Because radio is free to use after the equipment is installed and it doesn’t depend on cellular relays to transmit signals, it is a great choice for many different applications.
The most common of these devices is the CB, or citizens band radio, which is a radio that allows communication along a certain level of frequencies that are unlicensed and free to use. These frequencies do require a large antenna to use, however there is great interest in these realms and so a large amount of technology and literature supporting its use. These products, and similar transmitters, usually fit in the dash and have a simple handheld receiver transmitter similar to a walkie-talkie with the antenna placed on the exterior of the car.
Recently, micro-radios have become common in cars. These devices transmit extremely short radio waves to the car stereo from MP3 players to allow listening without cords or extension jacks. These products provide high quality sound that can only be picked up by a very nearby receiver.
