Digital Radios
Digital radios are the latest in radio technology. These devices make use of transmitting information using digital signals rather than analog signals along the same electromagnetic waves that have been used for the last century. The differences lies in the receiver, which just like any other digital receiver can sort and interpret the digital information. This leads to a much clearer signal than standard analog radio waves so larger amounts of information can be sent over a distance. Most people are familiar with these signals because of the rise in digital music radio, which has led to even greater improvements in sound quality over FM.
There is much to do amount this new medium. Unlike standard radio, digital formats are often broadcast by satellite from many different places in the world. Standard signals can only reach so far, but these broadcasts can be heard anywhere there is a receiver. This feature has led to greater freedom in broadcasting, but has removed the locality of radio as well as the free reception of the signals. Digital receivers must be subscribed to their transmitters in order for signals to be sent.
Despite this, many radio stations have switched to digital formats or plan to do so. The greater sound quality has been a boom to music lovers around the world. However, much is still to do to standardize this format in order to make it widely available and dependable. Nonetheless, many people contend it is the future of commercial radio. Television signals have also begun to transmit on similar frequencies as well because of the amount of information available to be carried in the signals.
